Buffalo Gap is a small Black Hills community of 131 people in southwestern South Dakota, positioned where the mountains meet the Great Plains. Highway 79 connects it to Hot Springs (15 miles north) and Rapid City (50 miles northeast), making it a quiet stop along the scenic route through pine forests and limestone cliffs. The town gets its name from a natural gap in the hills that once served as a corridor for migrating bison herds.
