Botarua occupies North Uist's western coast in the Outer Hebrides, reached via ferry to Lochmaddy then the A865. This remote Atlantic-facing settlement experiences fierce Hebridean weather and forms part of a cluster with Malacleit and Struan. The area's machair grasslands provide crucial habitat for corncrakes, whose distinctive rasping calls fill summer evenings.
