Banning sits in the San Gorgonio Pass along I-10, about 85 miles east of LA and 20 miles west of Palm Springs. The pass creates fierce winds that regularly exceed 40 mph, earning it a reputation as one of California's windiest spots. Route 243 heads north into the mountains toward Idyllwild. The Malki Museum downtown is one of California's first Native American museums.
