Arkleby lies in Cumbria's farming country, just inland from the Solway Firth. The A596 connects south to Workington and north toward Carlisle, whilst local roads lead west to Maryport through Plumbland. Most journeys are agricultural or commuter traffic, with longer routes via the M6 through Carlisle. The parish church houses a 12th-century carved stone depicting medieval salt workers.
