Achanalt lies along the A832 in the Ross and Cromarty Highlands, serving as a stop between Garve and Achnasheen. Most visitors arrive via the A9 from Inverness, turning west at Garve for the 15-kilometer drive through typical Highland scenery. The village sits beside Loch Achanalt, where several burns flow down from the hills, giving the place its Gaelic name meaning "field of the streams."
